Share the Gouda

I don’t do a lot of decorating in my classroom, but this year I put up a cheese board for Share the Gouda.

I did this because we have an initiative at my school to get kids thinking positive and sharing good things that they appreciate in life. Instead of just doing tell me something good/fine, I decided to go the punny route.

At the beginning of each class I look at my list of students and find someone who hasn’t been the “Big Cheese” in a while. This student writes their “gouda thing” on a scrap piece of paper/cheese.

When daily problem and attendance time is over, everyone shares their gouda with the folks at their tables. Finally, the “Big Cheese” gets to formally share his or her gouda with the entire class and then place it on the cheese board. The silliness of it all never gets old, and it’s a fun way to get to know the kids better and have a friendlier classroom.

I’ve been saving all of the gouda things in a file cabinet drawer. I can’t bring myself to throw them away. Hopefully, I’ll think of an interesting way to preserve the gouda that has been shared this school year.
