August 2013: Owl of the Month

Burrowing Owl

Burrowing Owl

Burrowing owls don’t live in trees.  They live in holes in the ground.  Often, they live in burrows that were once used by tortoises or rodents.  You can learn more about these unique owls by visiting http://nevadamagazine.com/issues/read/burrowing_owl/.

This owl of the month gave me an opportunity to practice using the artistic watercolor brush in Adobe Illustrator.  I also practiced using the gradient mesh tool to create the Burrowing Owl’s legs and feet.  I need to keep practicing, but for now I am happy with the little owl I illustrated.  I think the watercolor brushes help to make the feathers look realistic.  Gradient mesh gave the legs and feet more dimension.  Without the mesh, the owl looked like it was standing on flat paper legs.

Any chance you need a calendar for August 2013?  Well, I created one for you to download.
